Regatta Beach Club HistoryRegatta Beach Club

Located just north of Pier 60 and the Causeway Boulevard on Clearwater Beach Florida is the beautiful Regatta Beach Club. Nestled at 880 Mandalay Ave., this 12th floor, 355 unit complex was built in 1962 and has quite a history. Originally known as "Old Lady 880", the Regatta Beach Club actually got its start back in 1920 originally set to be called Kipling Arms Hotel. This nine-story luxury hotel was designed to be the crown jewel of Kipling Plaza in North Clearwater Beach. As the vision for Clearwater Beach came to fruition, it seemed that all roads lead to 880 Mandalay Ave. A bridge linking Sunset Pointe Road in Dunedin to Kipling Plaza was proposed connecting the area and leading to shops and restaurants as well as the Grand Hotel. But with the onset of the Great Depression, much of Clearwater Beach's fate was sealed and both projects were abandoned leaving only cinderblocks where the once prime gulf front location began.

For years, the old hotel weathered and became a local hangout for teenagers. Remaining abandoned until after World War II, banks started to approve 100% financing for developers and Clearwater Beach. With the demand for housing, developers borrowed several million dollars to complete the Kipling Arms Hotel but according to local journalists, the developer absconded with the second million dollars and the Kipling Plaza was taken over by the FHA, the Federal Housing Authority, which transferred to the Department of Housing and Urban Development and eventually the department inherited 880 Mandalay Avenue. The area turned into Mandalay Shore and eventually in the early 1980s turned into 880 Mandalay with gulf side apartments renting for up to $700 a month. A local restaurant catered weekend pool parties and live entertainment and for several years, life was pretty good.

In 2004, Crescent Heights, a New York-based developer, purchased 880 for over $46 million and renamed it the Regatta Beach Club. Crescent Heights, known as one of the largest condo conversion companies in the US today, offered existing renters a 10% discount if they converted to buyer status. In one day, 60 of the 349 condo units were contracted, and buyers online to the length of the building the first day 880 Mandalay was offered for sale to the public. With massive renovations, updates, and bringing the entire building up to modern standards and codes, popularity quickly expounded on the building. Since converting to ownership, the old party days of the Regatta Beach Club our history, however, it offers some of the most uninterrupted views of the Gulf of Mexico anywhere in Clearwater Beach and has been voted one of the country's best beaches.
